Zeitz MOCAA — When Light Enters the Silo

Every now and then, you enter a space that almost takes your breath away. For me, Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town was such an experience.

That day, light flooded into the old grain silo, giving the space an almost cathedral-like presence. The concrete, shadows and openings created something both industrial and sacred — almost like a dream.

I had not planned to photograph that day. But the light was there, and the room kept changing in front of me. It was impossible not to.

The museum, transformed by Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio, preserves much of the original silo structure while opening its centre into a vast atrium. Today, Zeitz MOCAA is one of the most important museums for contemporary African art.

For me, the building became more than a museum. It was a meeting between light, history and architecture — a space that felt almost alive.
