Water, Stone and Light, - The Patience of Seeing

Rygjarbit is an ancient boundary name from the Viking Age and early medieval Norway. It is mentioned in the sagas and has traditionally been understood as a border point between eastern and western Norway — between Viken and the lands later associated with Agder and Gulating.

The exact location of Rygjarbit is still debated, but the name has often been connected to the coastal landscape around Gjernestangen. Close from all this photographies, stands a protected beacon, once part of the old coastal warning system. From such points, fire and smoke could carry messages along the coast, linking headlands, settlements and sea routes.

Several sea battles have taken place just outside this boundary. Standing in this landscape today, it is easy to understand why it mattered. The coast is not only beautiful; it is strategic, exposed and full of movement.

For me, Rygjarbit gives the place a deeper presence. It is where landscape becomes history — where sea, stone, wind and memory still seem to hold traces of an older Norway.
